USCIB letter on electronic commerce and telecommunications in U.S. free trade agreements
November 19, 2001
The Honorable Robert Zoellick
United States Trade Representative
Winder Building
600 17th Street, N.W.
Washington, D.C. 20506
Dear Ambassador Zoellick:
I am writing to convey to you the critical importance that our members place on the inclusion of electronic commerce and telecommunications in the Free Trade Agreement being negotiated with Chile. To that end, USCIB and our members have been working closely with USTR staff on the development of e-commerce provisions and a separate Telecommunications Chapter. Our discussion with your staff and among our membership on these subjects for both the Chile and Singapore Free Trade Agreements is on-going with important issues still unresolved.
We cannot over-emphasize the importance of reaching agreement on the inclusion of e-commerce provisions and a separate Telecommunications Chapter. I would strongly urge you and your team to take additional time now, as necessary, to achieve a sound foundation for trade in telecommunications and electronic commerce.
We greatly appreciate your efforts in continuing to promote e-commerce and telecommunications.
Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this issue further.
Sincerely,
Thomas M.T. Niles
President, USCIB
