USCIB Members Brief Deputy Head of OECD on e-Business and Other Issues

OECD Deputy Secretary General Herwig Schlögl was briefed on an array of key business concerns during an October visit to USCIB’s New York headquarters.  The meetings provided a good opportunity for members to provide input on OECD projects both old and new.

Mr. Schlögl  discussed a variety of e-commerce and telecommunications issues being addressed in the OECD with three senior USCIB members: Edward J. Regan (J.P. Morgan Chase), chair of USCIB's E-Commerce Committee; Kenneth W. Leeson (Cullen International), chair of the Telecommunications Committee; and Charles Prescott (Direct Marketing Association), chair of USCIB’s Working Group on Privacy and Transborder Data Flows.

Issues addressed included broadband development, Internet cost-sharing, information security and consumer protection, including the fight against spam.

In addition, Wilbur Ross (International Steel Group) and Terry Straub (US Steel) met with Mr. Schlögl to discuss the OECD’s work on steel, especially the extent of government support that would be allowed under a global steel agreement, including for environmental mandates and research and development.  And Rick Johnson (Arnold & Porter) addressed elements of the OECD’s work on intellectual property rights.
