European Union:

Warsaw Conference to Examine Impact of EU Enlargement on World Trade

On  May 1, 2004, ten countries (Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) will officially enter the European Union, thereby increasing membership to 25 nations with a population of some 450 million.

How are international trade and investment patterns likely to change as a result of EU enlargement?  How will expansion affect the competitive position of both EU and non-EU companies in world markets?  How will the new EU shape its relations with non-EU countries, and with international organizations such as the OECD and the WTO?

To address these questions – and to open a dialogue between business, governments and the OECD – the Polish employers federation, PKPP, will host a two-day conference in Warsaw on April 1-2, on “EU Expansion and World Trade: Implications for Business in Poland and OECD Countries.”

Sessions within the round table will tackle issues such as how the European Union fits into the world trading system, the role of business organizations in removing trade barriers within the EU and worldwide, and specifically, how the EU enlargement will affect the Polish economy.

Invited participants include OECD Secretary General Donald Johnston, EU Commissioner Pascal Lamy, OECD Trade Committee Chair Luzius Wasescha as well as numerous high-level business and government representatives.

PKPP serves as the Polish member of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) to the OECD, and hence part of USCIB global network of industry groups.

USCIB encourages U.S. business participation at this key event.  To download the conference program, click here.   To learn more, please visit BIAC’s website, or contact Ms. Lucyna Gebler at PKPP headquarters at LGebler@era.pl.
