Mr. Smith attended his first ILO conference in 1953, beginning a span of service that lasted until 1992. He served on the ILO’s governing body, and he played a leading role in the International Organisation of Employers, the USCIB affiliate that provides business input into the tripartite ILO. Mr. Smith served as president of the IOE General Council during 1990 and 1991.
“Charlie was an arch anti-communist and promoter of free market principles, at a time when such ideas were in the minority,” said Edward E. Potter (McGuiness Norris & Williams), who has been involved with ILO affairs for over 20 years and serves as USCIB’s labor counsel. “Known for his tough positions, he was liked by all for his good humor and bon vivant personality.”
Mr. Smith was also past chairman of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Endowment for Democracy. USCIB wishes to extend its sincere condolences to his family.
