Small Business:

OECD’s Istanbul Meeting to Recognize SMEs as Motor for Economic Growth

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) represent over 95 percent of businesses in most members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), the Paris-based group encompassing the 30 most advanced industrial democracies.

In recognition both of SMEs’ key role in society and for their contribution to growth, the government of Turkey and the OECD are jointly organizing the 2nd Ministerial on "Promoting Entrepreneurship and Innovative SMEs in a Global Economy" in Istanbul, June 3-5.

USCIB participates in the work of the OECD through its affiliation with BIAC, which has been invited to send a delegation to the Istanbul event.

The first OECD ministerial-level conference on SMEs was held in Bologna, Italy in June 2000. That meeting was a critical step in promoting international cooperation to better respond to small business issues.  The Bologna Conference reviewed and highlighted key factors and best practices for improving SMEs’ competitiveness in the context of the globalized economy.  A major result of the conference was the implementation of the Bologna Charter on SME Policies, also know as the OECD Bologna Process.

Key policy issues to be discussed at the upcoming Istanbul conference are:

  • Effective policies and instruments for entrepreneurship and SME innovation; financing, clusters, networks and partnerships
  • Fostering women’s entrepreneurship
  • Facilitating SME access to global markets
  • Enhancing the performance of SMEs in developing and emerging economies.

Please contact USCIB if you would like to attend, or to be sure you stay abreast of future developments.
