Diversity and Inclusion Projects

USCIB/ICC USA supports diversity and inclusion in international dispute resolution. Towards this end, we encourage arbitrators, mediators and experts from ethnically diverse backgrounds to register on our Neutrals Databases. We also encourage participation in our arbitration events and activities.

In 2021, USCIB/ICC USA’s Arbitration Committee created a Task Force on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to address the lack of adequate diversity and inclusion amongst U.S. arbitrators and arbitration practitioners in international arbitration.  Diversity and inclusion for these purposes include all underrepresented constituencies.  Chaired by Nancy M. Thevenin and Jonathan Greenblatt, the task force focuses on the following:

  1. Increasing arbitral nomination for appointments of diverse neutrals, led by Jay Alexander
  2. Outreach to law schools and law students, led by Chris Campbell
  3. Creating opportunities for pathways to practice, led by Kabir Duggal

Other projects in which Committee members have participated include:

REAL – Racial Equality for Arbitration Lawyers

REAL is a group of global lawyers practicing in international arbitration and striving to achieve racial equality for arbitration lawyers.

The New List of Arbitrators of African Descent with a U.S. Nexus

Created by arbitrators Nancy M. Thevenin and Dr. Katherine Simpson as a direct response to the perceived shortage of African American arbitrators, the New List Arbitrators of African Descent with a U.S. Nexus (the “List Project”) includes experienced, up-and-coming, and new entries to the industry. The List Project is meant to assist parties, neutrals, law firms and institutions to identify ADR professionals of African descent.

The current version of the List Project can be found here.
