Investing in People at Work: Event at Columbia University

The International Labor Organization (ILO) Office for the United States in collaboration with Columbia University is hosting an afternoon conference, followed by an early evening reception to discuss the impact of the gig economy on shaping today’s workplace, as it relates to the protection and rights of independent workers, outside the auspices of the ordinary workforce. Robust dialogue will be facilitated by Columbia University’s leading experts in economics and labor rights with speakers representing the interests and rights of workers in today’s changing workforce from the ILO and from the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission and Freelancer’s Union. Panel discussions will include a balance of perspectives from companies involved in employment and related services for the growing independent economy-SalesForce and Manpower, with a possible opening discussion by Marriott, representing the workforce of the hospitality sector.

An afternoon event followed by a brief reception will be comprised of the following topics:

• Overview on the changing nature of work from traditional work to independent work
• Shifting terms of employment from permanent to contract-exploration of different types of independent work categories
• Sustainability of independent work. (Can independent work eventually replace traditional forms of work)?
• Current compensation and benefits of independent workers
• Minority, immigrant and gender parities in the protection of independent workers
• Dialogue on various perspectives from corporate representatives
• Policy recommendations on the protection of independent workers from the shift in employment from permanent to contract
